    Localization-enhanced biexciton binding in semiconductors

    The influence of excitonic localization on the binding energy of biexcitons is investigated for quasi-three-dimensional and quasi-two-dimensional AlxGa1−xAs structures. An increase of the biexciton binding energy is observed for localization energies comparable to or larger than the free biexciton binding energy. A simple analytical model for localization in the weak confinement regime ascribes the increase to a quenching of the additional kinetic energy of the exciton-exciton motion in the biexciton

    Transient four-wave mixing in T-shaped GaAs quantum wires

    The binding energy of excitons and biexcitons and the exciton dephasing in T-shaped GaAs quantum wires is investigated by transient four-wave mixing. The T-shaped structure is fabricated by cleaved-edge overgrowth, and its geometry is engineered to optimize the one-dimensional confinement. In this wire of 6.6×24 nm2 size, we find a one-dimensional confinement of more than 20 meV, an inhomogeneous broadening of 3.4 meV, an exciton binding energy of 12 meV, and a biexciton binding energy of 2.0 meV. A dispersion of the homogeneous linewidth within the inhomogeneous broadening due to phonon-assisted relaxation is observed. The exciton acoustic-phonon-scattering coefficient of 6.1±0.5 μeV/K is larger than in comparable quantum-well structures

    Management of postoperative internal carotid artery intimal flap after carotid endarterectomy: a cohort study and systematic review.

    OBJECTIVE Postoperative internal carotid artery (ICA) intimal flap (IF) is a potential complication after carotid endarterectomy (CEA) for carotid artery stenosis. There are no clear recommendations in the current literature on the management of this condition due to sparse evidence. Some authors advocate carotid stent placement or reoperation, while others suggest watchful waiting. The aim of this study was to analyze incidence and management strategies of postoperative ICA-IF, and moreover, to put these findings into context with a systematic literature review. METHODS The authors retrospectively reviewed all consecutive CEA cases performed at the University Hospital of Bern over a decade (January 2008 to December 2018). The incidence of postoperative ICA-IF, risk factors, management strategies, and outcomes were analyzed. These results were put into context with a systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines. RESULTS A total of 725 CEAs were performed between January 2008 and December 2018. Postoperative ICA-IF was detected by routine duplex neurovascular ultrasound (NVUS) in 13 patients, corresponding to an incidence rate of 1.8% (95% CI 1.0%-3.1%). There were no associated intraluminal thrombi on the detected IF. Intraoperative shunt placement was used in 5.6% and one or more intima tack sutures were performed in 42.5% of the 725 cases. There was no significant association between intraoperative shunt placement and the occurrence of an IF (p > 0.99). Two patients (15.4%) with IF experienced a transient postoperative neurological deficit (transient ischemic attack). In these cases, the symptoms resolved spontaneously without any interventions or change in the antiplatelet regimen. All other cases (84.6%) with IF were asymptomatic. In 1 patient (7.7%) with IF, the antiplatelet treatment was switched from a mono- to a dual-antiaggregating regimen because the IF led to a stenosis > 70%; this patient remained asymptomatic. All cases of IFs were managed conservatively with close radiological follow-up evaluations, without reoperation or stenting of the ICA. All 13 IFs vanished spontaneously after a mean duration of 6.9 months (median 1.5 months, range 0.5-48 months). A systematic literature review revealed a postoperative ICA-IF incidence of 3.0% (95% CI 2.1%-4.1%) with relatively heterogenous management strategies. CONCLUSIONS Postoperative ICA-IF is a rare finding after CEA. Conservative therapy with close NVUS follow-up evaluations appears to be an acceptable and safe management strategy for asymptomatic IFs without associated intraluminal thrombi

    Synthesis and characterization of CdS nanoparticle based multiwall carbon nanotube-maleic anhydride-1-octene nanocomposites

    CdS nanoparticles were synthesized by sonication from cadmium chloride and thiourea using a multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-maleic anhydride (MA)-1-octene system as the matrix. The matrix was obtained by the "grafting from" approach from oxidized carbon nanotubes and maleic anhydride-1-octene. Multiwall carbon nanotubes used for reinforcing the matrix were synthesized by Catalytic Chemical Vapor Deposition using Fe-Co/Al2O3 as the catalyst. The obtained nanostructures were characterized by FTIR, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, TEM, SEM and UV-vis spectroscopy. The average CdS particle diameter was 7.9 nm as confirmed independently by TEM and XRD. UV-vis spectroscopy revealed that the obtained nanostructure is an appropriate base material for making optical devices. The novelty of this work is the use of the MWCNT-MA-1-octene matrix obtained via the "grafting from" approach for the synthesis of uniformly dispersed CdS nanocrystals by ultrasonic cavitation to obtain a polymer nanocomposite.     Hydrogen Bonding in Proton Transfer Compounds of 5 Sulfosalicylic Acid With Ortho-Substituted Moocyclic Heteroaromatic Lewis Bases

    The crystal structures of the 1:1 proton-transfer compounds of 5-sulfosalicylic acid with the ortho-substituted monocyclic heteroaromatic Lewis bases, 2-aminopyridine, 2- hydroxypyridine and 2-aminopyrimidine, viz. 2-aminopyridinium 5-sulfosalicylate (1), 2-hydroxypyridinium 5-sulfosalicylate monohydrate (2) and 2-aminopyrimidinium 5- sulfosalicylatemonohydrate (3) have been determined and their hydrogen-bonding patterns described. All compounds are monoclinic, space group P21/c, with Z=4 in cells with dimensions a=7.898(5), b=11.159(11), c=14.912(7) A° , β =96.849(11)◦ (1);=7.260(2), b=15.292(3), c=12.615(2) A° , β =102.45(5)◦ (2) and a=7.0430(7), b=12.1871(16), c=16.2825(12) A° , β =101.364(7)◦ (3). All three compounds show some molecular disorder, in 1 within the cation species and with both 2 and 3, a similar rotational disorder in the anion sulfonate group. Hydrogen bonding in all three compounds together with significant cation-anion or cation-cation inter-ring π–π interactions generate three-dimensional layered polymer structures
